If you’ve got a standard UK driving licence, you’re good to go for the vast majority of adapted vehicles for hire.
But of course, there are a few details worth clearing up. Let’s break it down without the jargon.
Most Adapted Vehicles = No Special Licence Needed
You don’t need a separate category on your licence just because the vehicle’s adapted. Whether it’s got a ramp, swivel seat, lowered floor, or grab rails, if the vehicle’s under 3.5 tonnes, your regular Category B licence covers it.
The goal with adaptations isn’t to make life more complicated. It’s to make driving possible, comfortable, and safe – without putting more paperwork on your plate.
What About Hand Controls or Other Driving Adaptations?
Here’s where it gets a tiny bit more specific, but still very manageable.
If you’re planning to drive using hand controls, you do need to have completed a driving assessment for that setup. Not a full re-test. Just an evaluation with a specialist centre (like a Driving Mobility centre) to confirm you’re confident and safe with your particular controls.
It’s not about ticking boxes. It’s about making sure the controls suit you. Everyone’s different – and cars should match the person, not the other way round.
Once you’ve done that assessment, your licence may include a small code (like 40, 78, etc.) to show which adaptations you’ve been cleared to use. It’s just there so we (and the insurers) know what’s safe and legal for you to drive.

You’re Not Driving? Even Easier.
If you’re just hiring the vehicle for someone else to drive – a family member, carer, support worker – then you don’t need any assessment or licence updates at all.
As long as the main driver has a standard UK licence (and a clean-ish driving history), we’ll handle the rest. Insurance, checks, paperwork – all sorted. You can be the passenger, the planner, the person keeping the snacks flowing, and we’ll make sure the ride suits everyone involved.
